United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated at the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council called by Iran that "we cannot and must not give up on peace."

Guterres stated that the UN "must act, immediately and decisively, to halt the fighting and return to serious, sustained negotiations on the Iran nuclear program." He also called for a talk to be held to come to a verifiable solution, which would include full access by UN nuclear inspectors.

The secretary-general stated that one path would lead to wider war, while the other to de-escalation and he added that "we know which path is right."
