Hamas has chosen Muhammad Ismail Darwish, also known as Abu Omar Hassan, as its new political bureau leader after the assassination of the group's previous leader Ismail Haniyeh, Al Arabiya reported on Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

According to the report, Darwish will be the head of the Hamas political wing until new elections are held.

Darwish, who lives in Qatar, is the current head of Hamas' Shura Council. He is a shadowy figure in the group, who rarely appears in public, but is also one of the most powerful figures within the organization, according to Israeli media.
