House passes 'Dreamers' act

United States House of Representatives passed the Dream and Promise Act which would provide more than 2 million so-called Dreamers and other illegals with a chance for citizenship.

The bill would protect the Dreamers - immigrants who came to the US illegally as children - from deportation, grant them permanent residency and help them move toward citizenship. The bill would also shield other immigrants who arrived in the US fleeing wars or natural disasters.

The White House said it "strongly opposes" the measure as it "would incentivize and reward illegal immigration while ignoring and undermining key Administration immigration objectives and policy priorities, such as protecting our communities and defending our borders" so it is unlikely the bill will pass a vote in the Senate.
