The turmoil that saw three Tory prime ministers in a matter of months made the United Kingdom an "international laughing stock" from which the country is still struggling to recover, House Speaker Lindsay Hoyle said on Tuesday.
In an interview with BBC Radio 4's PM program, Hoyle described this year's events as a "revolving door" of changing ministers that left people wondering "what was happening to our democracy." He added that the arrival of Liz Truss as the prime minister in September, which was meant to bring "new hope" and "new vision," only caused further confusion.
The speaker also stated that he was the only point of continuity in the British parliament during this time, as ministers were constantly resigning and being replaced. "Nobody has seen anything like this before," he concluded.
