Yemen's Houthi rebel group said on Monday that it launched "a number of naval missiles" to strike and "directly" hit the United States vessel Star Iris in the Red Sea, the forces' spokesperson Yahya Saree confirmed in a statement.
The spokesperson underlined that the group will not hesitate to carry out additional attacks in the future in retaliation for Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and "ongoing" aggression by the United States and United Kingdom against Yemen. According to VesselFinder data, the ship in question was sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands.
Earlier, it was reported that the European Union member states have agreed on the details of the Apsides operation to secure the waters of the Red Sea against Houthis' continued attacks. Washington issued a one-week warning to the rebel group, demanding that it cease all targeting of commercial vessels before the group's redesignation as a "terrorist" organization came into force.
