Scottish National Party (SNP) announced on Monday that Humza Yousaf has been chosen as its new leader following the departure of Nicola Sturgeon. Sturgeon also resigned as Scotland's first minister, which means the Scottish Parliament will have to vote to confirm Yousaf's appointment on Tuesday.
The 37-year-old Yousaf has served as justice secretary and health secretary in the Scottish Cabinet, as well as a member of the Scottish Parliament since 2016. He is the first South Asian and Muslim politician to hold a Cabinet position in Scotland. "My immediate priority will be to continue to protect every Scot as far as we can from the harm inflicted by the cost of living crisis, to recover and reform our NHS and other vital public services, to support our well-being economy and to improve the life chances of people across our country," Yusaf said.
