Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Wednesday that Budapest has started negotiations with Doha on the purchase of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Following a meeting in Qatar, Szijjarto emphasized that the Hungarian energy company MVM will enter into agreements with QatarEnergy regarding the prospect of supplying Hungary with LNG. "It is in Hungary's interest to draw in new sources into its gas supply," he stated. "If Croatia expands the capacity of its LNG terminal, as promised ... then it could be realistic for gas from Qatar to have a role in Hungary's energy supply within three years," the foreign minister added.

Previously, Budapest repeatedly expressed opposition to the European Union's proposed price ceiling on Russian gas, noting that such action could hamper the supply of the commodity to Hungary.
