United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk (pictured) called for easing economic sanctions on Syria during a groundbreaking visit to the country.
Speaking in Damascus on Wednesday, during what marks the first-ever visit by a UN rights chief to Syria, Turk urged the global community to reconsider sanctions, highlighting their toll on the Syrian people. He also emphasized the need for transitional justice to ensure accountability and reconciliation. "Revenge and vengeance are never the answer," Turk said, advocating for a balanced approach to healing.
The visit also included a stop at the former Sednaya prison, a notorious torture center under Assad's regime. Just two months ago, it held thousands of political prisoners.
