The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) revealed in a statement on Wednesday that it entered into contact with Japan's national authorities after an 8.7 magnitude earthquake hit near Russia's east coast, triggering tsunami warnings across the Pacific.

"Initial reports indicate no safety impact for nuclear power plants along the Pacific coast. ALPS [Advanced Liquid Processing System] treated water discharge halted in line with safety protocols," IAEA commented.

Earlier, Japan downgraded some tsunami warnings to advisories, with alerts in the northern parts of the Pacific coast still active.
