IAEA: No immediate risk to Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said on Tuesday that the attack on the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine led to a "significant reduction" in the level of the reservoir used to supply cooling water to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. However, he said there is no immediate risk to the safety of the plant at the moment.

The IAEA's mission to Zaporizhzhia said the plant has shut off non-essential consumers to preserve water and the management is considering alternative water sources. Grossi said the main alternative is a cooling pond next to the facility and insisted that "nothing must be done to potentially undermine its integrity." He added that he will travel to Zaporizhzhia next week.
