Former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant is set to travel to the United States for the first time since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for his arrest, the Israeli Army Radio reported on Monday. According to the report, Gallant will travel to Washington D.C. next Sunday to talk to senior US officials.
ICC stated last Thursday that it has reasonable grounds to believe Gallant and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are responsible for war crimes in the Gaza Strip, issuing arrest warrants for both of them. Gallant condemned the warrants, saying that the ICC's decision "encourages murderous terrorism."
The Biden administration reportedly rejected the warrants, claiming that the decision was made following "troubling process errors" and that the ICC "does not have jurisdiction over this matter." However, other countries, such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy and Turkey, stated that the ICC decision is binding and that they will abide by it.
