German business climate improved in January, with the Business Climate Index rising to 85.1 compared to the 84.7 revised value from December, the Institute for Economic Research (Ifo) said in its latest report published on Monday. The January reading came in above analysts' expectations.

Meanwhile, the Current Assessment Index increased from 85.1 in December to 86.1 in January. The Expectations Index dropped from 84.4 in December to 84.2 in January.

The improvement was "primarily due to a more positive assessment of the current situation," Ifo Institute President Clemens Fuest commented. "However, expectations deteriorated again. Companies continue to be pessimistic," he added.
