The Biden administration told negotiators in Congress that Inflation Reduction Act is off the table when it comes to discussing spending plans and resolving the debt limit issue, CNN reported on Thursday citing two sources with knowledge on the matter.
House Republicans have been targeting the bill in their recent budget proposal, which United States President Joe Biden condemned. According to the sources, the White House wants to reduce the scope of negotiations by making certain items unavailable for discussion, and then start talking about spending cuts that are actually acceptable.
Other non-negotiable items also include the topic of student debt, alongside Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, the sources added. They noted that Biden is willing to consider a limit on future spending, but would want that to last for a shorter period of time. The WH also wants the debt ceiling increase to last longer than a year.
