Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani said on Monday that Iran "has the right to punish the aggressor within the framework of international law" after Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran last week. While Israel has not officially taken responsibility for the attack, Iran insists Israel committed a "gross violation of international law" by killing an official guest of the Iranian government. Haniyeh was in Iran for the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Kanani called on the international community to condemn Israel's alleged attack, "support permissible punishment" and avoid "encouraging" the Israeli government. He insisted that Iran does not seek to escalate tensions in the region but that it cannot remain "indifferent."
