Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani (pictured) sent an official government delegation to Damascus on Friday to discuss bilateral relations and a possible restoration of the Iraqi oil pipeline that goes through Syrian territory to the ports of the Mediterranean Sea, Al-Sudani's office stated.
According to the prime minister's office, the Iraqi delegation will be headed by the country's National Intelligence Service President Hamid al-Shatri, and it is expected to meet with Syria's President Ahmed al-Sharaa. In addition to discussing the oil pipeline, the two delegations are also expected to talk about counterterrorism cooperation and collaborating on securing the shared border against any potential threats.
"The meetings in Damascus will reaffirm Iraq's support for Syria's unity and sovereignty, and underscore that Syria's stability is essential to Iraq's national security and to the security of the broader region," Al-Sudani's office said in a statement.
