The Italian Data Protection Authority (Garante) shared on Friday that it decided to fine ChatGPT maker OpenAI €15 million over inadequate use of users' personal data by the generative artificial intelligence application.
After completing an investigation, the regulator found that ChatGPT processed private data "to train ChatGPT without first identifying an adequate legal basis and violated the principle of transparency and the related information obligations towards users." In addition, OpenAI did not implement age verification tools, with the "risk of exposing children under the age of 13 to responses inappropriate to their level of development and self-awareness," according to the regulator.
Furthermore, the Garante instructed OpenAI to conduct a six-month information campaign.
