Italy's Commissioner Eugenio Giani announced on Tuesday that a new liquefied natural gas terminal will be built in the city of Piombino in western Italy.
The preparations for the floating storage and regasification unit will be carried out as early as Wednesday by gas grid operator Snam, with the infrastructure required to be operational by the end of March.
The project stems from the plan of the former government of Mario Draghi, aiming to circumvent uncertainty surrounding the Russian gas supply which now accounts for only around 10% of Italian gas imports, compared to 40% before the Ukraine invasion.
