The Japanese officials are set to invite Saudi Arabia to join discussions on the next-generation fighter aircraft, Nikkei reported on Tuesday.
The fighter jet is being jointly developed by Japan, Italy, and the United Kingdom under the Global Combat Air Program, and is expected to be released in 2035.
Japan's Defense Minister Gen Nakatani is set to travel to Italy in May, in order to meet with his Italian and UK counterparts to talk about Saudi Arabia's potential role in the project. Riyadh would possibly be buying equipment and investing money in the development process.
