The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is weighing banning new sales of conventional cars by the middle of next decade, looking to completely shift to electric cars sales in an attempt to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, Nikkei Asia reported on Thursday citing people familiar with the government's plans.
The country is seeking to cut carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles that accounted for a total of 16% of the country's total emissions in 2018.
The decision is reportedly expected to be announced later this month following discussions between the government and car industry executives.
