The Japanese Defense Ministry is planning to start extending the range of its missiles to over 1,000 kilometers, Nikkei reported on Wednesday.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the missiles will be developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. and feature the options to be launched from land, planes, and warships. The ministry is allegedly planning to start using those missiles in the second half of the 2020s. "As neighboring countries proceed with missile development, Japan will also need equipment to enhance deterrence," one of the department's senior officials told Nikkei.
The report comes after North Korea fired a missile that landed just outside Japan's waters.
