The Japanese government is planning to roll out a vaccine that will specifically target the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in October, Kyodo News reported on Friday citing sources familiar with the matter.
The sources stated that the developers of the newest version of the vaccine, American multinational pharmaceutical corporations Pfizer Inc. and Moderna Inc., will be asking for its authorization in Japan soon. One of the sources mentioned that the introduction of the new vaccine will be discussed on Monday at a health ministry panel.
The bivalent vaccine uses ingredients that have already been used to create previous COVID-19 shots, mixing them with components from the BA.1 subtype of the Omicron variant.
