Japan allegedly created a department intended to craft plans for the evacuation of Japanese citizens located on islands in the East China Sea in case of any possible military emergency in the region, Nikkei Asia reported.
The Japanese government will instruct Okinawa and other prefectures in the Kyushu region, as well as the Yamaguchi prefecture, to devise evacuation plans for its inhabitants during the next fiscal year, according to the news agency. Tokyo will utilize transportation from the civilian sector and local government authorities to assist in the evacuations and may employ vessels and aircraft used by the Japan Coast Guard and Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) should the need arise.
The new department will be led by an unnamed official from the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, with other members from the transport, health and education ministries and other agencies to join the department soon, the news agency reported.
