Japan's total merchandise trade deficit surprised analysts' projections in November, landing at ¥117.6 billion, according to a report released by the country's Ministry of Finance on Wednesday.

The figure marked an improvement when compared to the ¥462.1 billion deficit recorded in October this year.

The country's exports increased by 3.8% year-on-year during the period, while imports decreased by the same amount.
