British Prime Minister Boris Johnson suggested the idea of a European Commonwealth to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his visit to Kiev in April, Corriere della Sera reported on Thursday. According to people familiar with the talks, the new alliance would assemble countries that are protective of their national sovereignty, advocate economic liberalism and oppose Russia's military threat.

The report claims the European Commonwealth would include the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and "potentially Turkey at a later date." Ukraine has allegedly not provided a definitive response and is waiting for the European Union's decision on its membership application.
