United States Judge Aileen Cannon blocked on Tuesday the release of the second part of former special counsel Jack Smith's report on his investigation into US President Donald Trump's classified documents case to the members of Congress.
Judge Cannon's order from today granted a motion by Trump's co-defendants, Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, and Trump himself to prevent the US Department of Justice from releasing the redacted version of the second volume of Smith's report to the members of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees. According to the judge, who reviewed that part of the report, the volume contains "voluminous and detailed Rule 16 discovery about the allegations in this criminal case, which remains pending on appeal as to Defendants Nauta and De Oliviera."
After the first volume of the report was released to the public, Judge Cannon temporarily blocked the release of the final report, referring it to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, which declined to block the release.
