Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei (pictured) claimed on Monday that the United States, Israel, as well as "some treasonous Iranians abroad" orchestrated the latest unrest in the country sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman who died in police custody after an alleged violation of the country's dress code.
"The young girl's death was a tragic incident that saddened us too," it was written on Khamenei's Twitter page. The Iranian leader said that, on the other hand, protesters burned the Quran, mosques, banks, and cars. "These weren't normal acts. They were planned," he alleged.
Western countries condemned the Iranian government's actions and continued to take measures against Tehran over incidents at the protests.
