The British economy could suffer a "massive hit" next year in response to the government's refusal to negotiate with unions to end strikes in the public sector, according to Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves.
In an interview with the Guardian posted on Saturday, Reeves accused Downing Street of "recklessly" allowing strikes to continue and said its refusal to discuss pay with the unions was a "total abdication of responsibility." Reeves also claimed that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was seeking confrontation with the unions for political reasons and that his refusal to negotiate was motivated by the desire to unite Tory MPs.
Earlier in December, Sunak hinted at the possibility of the government halting "unreasonable strikes" by introducing stricter legislation.
