Hurricane Laura made landfall near the Texas-Louisiana border on Thursday as a Category 4 storm, bringing huge storm surges and winds of 150 miles an hour, according to the latest information from the National Hurricane Center.
The "extremely dangerous" hurricane is expected to produce "catastrophic" impacts, the National Weather Service warned. "TAKE COVER NOW! Treat these imminent extreme winds as if a tornado was approaching and move immediately to the safe room in your shelter. Take action now to protect your life!" the NHC's advisory said.
The devastating hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 reached Category 5 strength while approaching the Louisiana coast but made landfall as Category 3 storms.
