Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed hope on Thursday that the United States will join Syria peace negotiations once Donald Trump takes over as president from Barack Obama on January 20, according to TASS.

Lavrov stated the talks should be based on “friendly and collective cooperation” and that he hopes the Trump administration will take part in the efforts to find a peaceful solution to the situation in Syria.

Earlier today, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin announced that a deal has been reached to implement a ceasefire in the Middle Eastern country on December 30 and subsequently start peace talks. Putin added that Russia, Iran and Turkey agreed to cooperate in order to settle the Syrian crisis.
