Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday urged Israeli and Palestinian sides to stop as soon as possible the hostilities that began on Saturday, when Hamas carried out a surprise attack on Israel.
The minister also said that Russia and the Arab League can contribute to ending the ongoing fighting in the Gaza Strip and reaching a ceasefire deal, which is why he is holding a meeting with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abu al-Gheit today in Moscow. However, he stressed that the current status quo in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict zone is "not viable and requires adjustments to our agenda."
On the other hand, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said it is not yet possible to say whether the current conflict in Gaza will harm relations between Moscow and Hamas. However, he claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not planning to communicate with the Israeli and Palestinian authorities.
