Lavrov: No alternative to dialogue with N. Korea

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov insisted on Tuesday that “there is no alternative” to re-establishing dialogue with North Korea and resuming a political process to alleviate tensions in the region.

Lavrov affirmed that his country and China have “introduced a relevant proposal” which they will be promoting in the United Nations and added that he hopes “a sensible approach” on behalf of all involved will produce an acceptable solution to hostility in the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea responded to the new round of sanctions adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council by accusing the US of escalating the situation in the region to “the brink of nuclear war.” The government of Kim Jong-un stated as well that it considers itself a “responsible nuclear power” that would only consider using its weapons to protect itself from the US and its “hostile” policies.
