Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday that Moscow continues to believe in the one-China principle and criticized the United States for claiming it does not support Taiwan's independence but taking actions that would suggest otherwise.
"Our position on the existence of only one China remains unchanged. The same position is periodically confirmed by the United States in words, but in practice, as you yourself understand, their deeds do not always coincide with their words," Lavrov told reporters during a press conference after a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) foreign ministers meeting. "We have no problems with the principle of upholding China's sovereignty, and proceed from the fact that no provocations that could aggravate the situation will be undertaken," he added.
The comments come amid China's warnings to Washington over House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's potential trip to Taiwan in the coming days.
