The White House said on Tuesday that 104% additional tariffs on China are set to into effect at midnight because China has not removed their 34% tariff on the US, local media reported on Tuesday.

Fox Business' Edward Lawrence reported earlier, citing White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, that the tariffs "went into effect at noon eastern time." The White House secretary further stated she may have been misquoted. Lawrence later updated its X post to "when the tariffs go into effect at 12:01a April 9th."

Yesterday, US President Donald Trump threatened China with an additional 50% duty on imports entering the US unless the Asian giant removes its 34% retaliatory tariff, which would bring total import charges to 104%.
