Lebanon's Prime Minister Najib Mikati (pictured) on Tuesday said that his government received assurances from the United States that Israeli actions against Beirut and its southern suburbs will decrease.

"We have received US guarantees for a reduction in Israeli escalation targeting Beirut and its southern suburbs," Mikati said in an interview with Al Jazeera. He assured that efforts are underway to de-escalate tensions and to "remove any pretext for Israel to attack Beirut airport, ports, and land border crossings."

Regarding the Israeli army's strikes on members of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), he praised the "participating countries" and their rejection of the attacks. He added, "Israeli arrogance disregards peace forces because Israel fundamentally rejects peace. UNIFIL has informed us that it will not abandon its positions."
