United States Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Thursday that Mexico has agreed to "fully open its markets, including dropping their non-tariff trade barriers," calling it a "major win for US producers." He confirmed on X that existing tariffs will remain in place.

Lutnick described the recent call between President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum as "very positive and constructive." According to him, Mexico now understands that "any deal must address the twin crises of fentanyl/illegal immigration, as well as attacking Mexico's enormous trade deficit."

He added that both countries will work together over the next 90 days to examine how an agreement "can solve these problems once and for all."
