Belgian prime minister Charles Michel has described the lone-wolf machete attack on two police officers as a terrorist act.
"Initial indications very clearly point towards terrorism," the prime minister told to RTL-TVi in a telephone interview. He earlier expressed his solidarity with the attacked officers, their families and colleagues.
A man wielding machete approached the police station in the city of Charleroi on Saturday. Shouting "Allahu Akbar" ("God is great") he attacked two female police officers, wounding them both. He was shot and later died of the wounds. Public broadcaster RTBF reported that one of the attacked policewomen suffered heavy injuries to her face. The other officer was only slightly injured.
Belgium is still on a high alert following March attacks of the suicide bombers on the airport and on the city train system, killing 32 people.
