French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that he discussed trade relations and various international issues in a phone conversation with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.
"I reaffirmed France's commitment to continuing to build a strong economic relationship with China. As such, Chinese investment is welcome in France. But our companies must benefit from fair competition in both our countries. This is a fundamental point. We agreed to move forward as quickly as possible on the cognac issue, which is essential for our producers," Macron said in a post on X.
The French president also stated that he and Xi agreed that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine needs "a lasting and robust peace," which he said "begins with an immediate and unconditional ceasefire." The two leaders also discussed strategies for securing peace and security in the Middle East and preparing together for the United Nations conference on a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
