Magnitude 5.7 earthquake hits New Zealand’s Cook Strait

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck New Zealand's Cook Strait region, near the capital city of Wellington, according to local seismic monitor GeoNet.

The quake occurred at 5:08 am local time (Sunday). Its epicenter was located 25 kilometers west of Wellington at a depth of 30 kilometers.

Over 37,000 people across the North Island, including those far away as Auckland, reported feeling the tremor. No injuries or significant damage were reported, and no tsunami warning was issued.
