McConnell: China wins if Pelosi cancels Taiwan trip

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell claimed on Tuesday that China would get "a victory of sorts" if US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi cancels her planned visit to Taiwan, but insisted it is more important to ensure the island can respond to any potential attack from China than visiting Taipei.

"I think much more important than traveling to Taiwan is making sure we have worked with them to make sure have their defenses are adequate to the threat that may come from mainland China," McConnell stated.

After media reports suggested Pelosi is set to visit Taiwan in August, Beijing stated such a move would violate the one-China principle and endanger the relations between China and the US. China also threatened with "strong measures" if the visit goes ahead.
