German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a speech on Wednesday that the coronavirus pandemic represents the biggest challenge for the country since the Second World War.

Merkel stressed that the spread of the virus has to be curbed and suppressed until a vaccine is developed.

The chancellor also urged against hoarding supplies of groceries and called it "pointless," and showing "a complete lack of solidarity."

Germany has a total of 11,973 cases of confirmed infections with COVID-19, out of which 28 have died and 86 have recovered. Since yesterday, the number of reported infections surged by 2,606.
