Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), commented on Monday that the recent events that took place in the White House, involving United States President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, seem like an "intentional escalation."
"In my opinion, it was not a spontaneous reaction," he said, speaking at a press conference. During Zelensky's visit to the Oval Office, the Trump administration had a fallout with the former, insisting that he wasn't ready for peace.
Merz continued by saying that Europe needs to prepare for the fact that it will have to do "much much more" for its own security in the coming years and decades. "I also advocate that we do everything we can to keep the Americans in Europe," he added.
