Germany's expected new chancellor and leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), Friedrich Merz, stated on Wednesday that there should be a 0% tariff on all Transatlantic trade, while adding it would solve the issue of trade imbalance raised by United States President Donald Trump.

Merz made his remarks in the immediate aftermath of Trump's decision to delay reciprocal duties for 90 days for most countries, with a notable exception of China, and significantly lower reciprocal tariffs during the same three-month period.

Furthermore, Merz stressed that Europeans remain united in defending themselves.
