Meta Platforms announced on Friday that, starting at the beginning of October, Meta and "other platforms" will no longer allow ads on political, electoral, and social topics in the EU.
The move is in response to the bloc's new Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA) regulation, which the company says imposes burdensome requirements and legal uncertainty. "We're not the only company to have been forced into this position. Once again, we're seeing regulatory obligations effectively remove popular products and services from the market, reducing choice and competition," the company said in a blog post.
Additionally, Meta reaffirmed its commitment to supporting political speech and fair elections. It also stated that this new measure will not hinder individuals or candidates from discussing or debating politics on the platform.
