European Parliament President Roberta Metsola (pictured) shared on Monday during the Parliament's plenary session in Strasburg that the bloc's democracy is "under attack" following the arrest of Vice-President Eva Kaili.
Metsola stated that she has "stripped" the vice-president of all her roles. "These are challenging times for us all, but I know, I am convinced, that if we work together we can come out of it stronger... and [we] will continue to assist in other investigations for as long as it takes. Corruption cannot pay," she said.
Metsola stressed that nothing will be swept "under the rug," adding that no "impunity" will be granted to anyone convicted of corruption. She asserted that an internal investigation will be launched as well, so as to "look at all the facts related to the Parliament and to look at how our systems can become yet more watertight."
