Mexico may sue Google for 'Gulf of Mexico' name change

EPA-EFE/JOSE MENDEZ

Mexican President Claudia Sheibaum revealed on Thursday that her government is contemplating a legal action against Google over the use of the term "Gulf of America" rather than "Gulf of Mexico."

"Remember that the decree signed by Trump regarding the 'Gulf of America' is about its continental shelf, but Google doesn't get it," she elaborated. "If necessary, we will file a civil suit against Google for 'Gulf of Mexico' name change."

The tech giant has altered the designation of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America for users accessing the app within the United States. Meanwhile, individuals using the app in other regions around the globe will encounter the label: "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)." This change follows an order by US President Donald Trump to rename this body of water.
