Microsoft: Biden's AI chip rules 'beyond what's needed'

Microsoft Corporation stated on Thursday that rules imposed by the Biden administration on artificial intelligence (AI) chip exports went "beyond what's needed," urging United States President Donald Trump to ease them.

In a blogpost, previously previewed by The Wall Street Journal, the tech giant stressed that the current policies put many of Washington's allies in the "Tier Two" category, imposing "quantitative limits on the ability of American tech companies to build and expand AI datacenters in their countries."

Such rules undermine customer confidence that they would be able to purchase the AI computing capacity that matches their needs from the US, which is essential to their economic growth, Microsoft detailed. In turn, the "Diffusion Rule" will turn into a "gift to China's rapidly expanding AI sector."
