Israeli intelligence agency Mossad tracked the movement of Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah for years, the Washington Post reported citing anonymous Israeli officials. The Israeli military eventually killed Nasrallah as the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalated last month.
According to the report, Mossad also eavesdropped on Hezbollah for as many as nine years through compromised pagers. The devices also held a powerful explosive, which was "so carefully hidden as to be virtually undetectable, even if the device was taken apart." The decision to detonate the pagers was made on September 17, even though "some senior political and military officials in Israel remained deeply uncertain" about targeting Nasrallah as well, the report said.
