Billionaire and Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk unveiled the long-teased "Cybercab" during the company's "We, Robot" event by arriving on stage in the robotaxi.
"There's no steering wheel or pedals, so I hope this goes well," Musk said jokingly as he told the audience they would have a chance to test out the Cybercab at the event. He claimed that the cost of autonomous transport will be so low, "that you can think of it like individualized mass transit," adding that the operating cost of the Cybercab would be $0.20 per mile. "And you will be able to buy one," Musk continued, saying that the company expects the cost of the vehicle to be under $30,000.
"We expect to be in production with Cybercab in, probably, 2026," he declared, adding that it will use inductive chargers and not require any plugs. He also said he expects Full Self-Driving (FDS) technology available on Tesla's popular Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in Texas and California next year.
