Jeffrey Donaldson (pictured), the leader of the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), resigned with immediate effect on Friday, according to a statement from the party.

The DUP stated the move comes after 61-year-old Donaldson, who was appointed party leader in 2021, confirmed he has been charged with "allegations of an historical nature" and added his membership in the party as been suspended "pending the outcome of a judicial process." Member of Parliament for Belfast East Gavin Robinson has been appointed interim party leader.

Meanwhile, the Police Service of Northern Ireland stated it arrested a 61-year-old man "for non-recent sexual offences" and a 57-year-old woman for "aiding and abetting."
