Namibian President Hage Geingob dead at 82

Namibian President Hage Geingob died at the age of 82, Vice President Nangolo Mbumba announced on Sunday. Geingob was elected in 2014, receiving 87% of the vote, and was sworn in in March 2015.

Geingob previously served as prime minister from 1990 to 2002 and from 2012 until he was elected president. He was also Namibia's minister of trade and industry from 2008 to 2012. He led the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), Namibia's leading party since its independence from South Africa in 1990. Namibia will hold its next presidential election in November, with SWAPO choosing Deputy Prime Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as its candidate.
